BioRobotix Brand Tips

Q. Do MBP’s Span-8 tips available with ART® filters?
A. Molecular BioProducts is the only company to offer Span-8 tips as sterile, non-sterile, and with our patented ART® filters.

Q. Do MBP’s Span-8 tips require special adjustments to work on the Biomek FX?
A. No- as long as the Span-8 pod has been installed by Beckman. MBP’s tips are the same size (20ul & 250ul) and same length as the original Beckman Span-8 tips.

Q. Does MBP manufacture tips for automated workstations with the ART® filter?
A. Yes!! All of MBP's BioRobotix brand tips come available in sterile, non-sterile, and our patented ART® barrier varieties. Please see the BioRobotix brand tip section for more details.

Q. I can't find a tip for my robot!
A. Please try our Tip Search engine and if that doesn't work - call customer service at 800-995-2787 or 858-453-7551.

Q. What is a liquid sensing tip?
A. Liquid sensing tips, also known as conductive tips, are made by impregnating carbon into the plastic resin the tip is made out of. This makes the tips black in appearance. These tips can then be utilized on workstations that have the liquid sensing feature.

Q. What is a Span-8 pod?
A. The Span-8 pod is an independent 8-channel axis available for the Beckman Biomek FX system. It can exist singularly as the only pipetting head or in a dual bridge system with the Biomek FX 96-well or 384-well head.

Q. What is different about the Span-8 pod?
A. The Span-8 pod has independent axis control including variable height, variable span, volume, liquid sensing and liquid level tracking.

Q. What is the liquid sensing feature on an automated workstation?
A. Liquid sensing makes reference to the capability of an automated workstation to detect liquid in some kind of reservoir. This is usually achieved by sending a small electrical current through a liquid sensing disposable tip (made with carbon). Once the tip touches the liquid, the small capacitance built up in the system is discharged. The instrument reads the drop in capacitance as the signal that it has reached the liquid.

Q. What material are Span-8 tips made out of?
A. Our Span-8 tips, like all of our liquid sensing tips, are impregnated with carbon, which provides an electronic signal to the workstation when they come into contact with liquids.

Q. What MBP BioRobotix tips work on a Span-8 head?
A. We have made our 918 & 919 series tips in liquid sensing material to accommodate the liquid sensing feature of the Span-8 pod. - However, if you choose to turn off this feature and wish to use clear tips, some customers have found that our SoftFit regular 918 & 919 tips can also be used on the Span-8.
